Itinerary Day By Day
Day 1 – Arrival in Nanjing
Our guide will meet you outside the baggage claim area at Nanjing Airport and transfer you to your hotel.
Dating from 472BC Nanjing has a long history and is listed as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Nanjing means “southern capital” as opposed to Beijing which means “northern capital”. Many important historic events happened here including the signing of the Nanjing Treaty which ceded Hong Kong to Britain and the Taiping Rebellion. In January 1912 Dr Sun Yat-sen founded the Republic of China and made Nanjing the capital for a short time. In 1927 it was again made the capital under Chiang Kai-shek. In the west, however, it is probably most well known for the tragic Rape of Nanking when approximately 300,000 citizens were massacred by the invading Japanese in 1937.

Day Two – Nanjing
Attractions: Purple Mountain, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum
Located on the outskirts of Nanjing the Purple Mountain area has several different attractions with Dr Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum being the most impressive. Recognised by both the Nationalists and the Communists as the father of modern China he has been given a magnificent resting place. Three hundred and ninety-two steps lead up to the Mausoleum built in white marble and blue tiles representing the colours of the Nationalists. Other attractions around Purple Mountain include the Museum of Dr Sun Yat-sen, the Beamless Hall and the Linggu Pagoda. Also nearby is the Ming Xiaoling Tomb with its impressive avenue of stone statues.

Day 3 – Nanjing
Attractions: Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre, Xuanwu Lake, Confucius Temple
Today you will visit The Memorial Hall to the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre. It is a sobering place and portrays the message that we should learn from history and avoid such tragedies in the future. The detail in the Memorial Hall is amazing with so many eye witness accounts accompanied by many photographs and memorabilia.
Afterwards you will enjoy a change of pace at Xuanwu Lake. There are several small islands where you can have a relaxing stroll. Finish the day at the Confucius Temple which was once the imperial examination centre for the entire Jiangsu region. The area around the Temple has now become a huge tourist hotspot with lots of shops, restaurants as well as a snack street housed in traditional style buildings. A great place to browse.
